This simple guide will help you know exactly what is lifestyle newborn photography, and if it is right for you.

Knowing the difference between various newborn photography is important to get the outcome you desire for your session. When researching family photographers, inquire what type of newborn sessions they offer and if you can see a portfolio of past work.
I personally only offer lifestyle newborn photography. This means that I focus on the real natural connections as a family instead of using props and heavy posing. Of course I will gently guide you into poses like snuggling on the couch together or tilting your head at a flattering angle, my main goal is to photograph the love between family members. The newest family member is the star of this shoot unlike other family sessions. I don’t physically pose the baby in baskets or with props.
Knowing whether or not you prefer posed studio style newborn photography or lifestyle photography will help you to get your best desired outcome.

What do you plan to do with your images?
As with all of my sessions, I always ask my clients what is the plan once the images are taken. (I always advocate to have them printed!)This will be helpful in knowing exactly what you want. If you’re planning to hang newborn photos on your walls, which style of photography would complement your decor best? If you would like to send birth announcements what kind of photograph do you envision having on the front? These are all important questions to ask yourself when trying to decide if you want to with a studio newborn session or an in home lifestyle session.

Lifestyle newborn photography might be right for you if:
- you prefer natural, candid moments
- you want slight posing guidance in your home environment
- you like photo document style of authentic moments that help you remember this season
- You’re looking for a 1-2 hour photo session. Posed newborn sessions take longer, sometimes up to 3-4 hours to get baby deeply asleep and into each pose.
- you want photos that focus on connections

Where does a lifestyle newborn photography take place?
Lifestyle newborn sessions usually take place in your home. You can choose where you would like to go in your house. Here are some ideas:
- Nursery
- Master Bedroom
- Living Room
- Yard
- Siblings Bedroom
- Porch

Lifestyle sessions are meant to capture life in your home as it is in this specific stage of life. I will look for the spaces with the best light in your home. With your permission I will move anything out of the background that will detract from the finished portrait. Never be worried about the state of your house. I promise, we can create beautiful images anywhere in your home.
Do I need to have a perfect home to have in home lifestyle newborn photography?
Of course not! Who has a perfect house anyways? I remember the exhaustion that that newborn stage can bring. Part of my job is to help you remember the sweetness in your own envionment. You’ll likely be too tired to tidy a house, and it is not necessary. Don’t let your home stop you from having a lifestyle newborn session.

When should I book my newborn session?
I recommend booking at least 3-4 months before your due date, though you can book sooner than that, once you know your due date. This will ensure I have availability for your due date window (two weeks before and after your due date). I say window because I pencil you then have you give be a heads up once baby is here and we can get you in more specifically within that first two weeks of life.
